Its ruler was Atlas, the mortal son of Poseidon. That's how the island got its name - Atlantis means 'Island of Atlas'.
According to legend, Atlantis' downfall was when it fell out of favor with the gods. As punishment for their cockiness and insatiable lust for power, the gods doomed the citizens of Atlantis with the demise of their island empire.
