Empire Express harnesses the ease of use and power of the Macintosh so you can quickly, easily and accurately design your model railroad empire. Designing a layout is as simple as dragging track from the catalog palette to the plan window. Track pieces are automatically aligned to create accurate, kink-free track connections. Flex track can be easily bent to create smooth curves which meet the user-selected minimum radius standard.
The tool palette includes line, rectangle, circle, polygon and text tools which you can use to draw the layout room, structures and scenery. Empire Express was designed specifically for the Macintosh and supports the standard Macintosh features such as copy-and-paste and drag-and-drop. In addition it also features multiple undo and redo, undoing up to 25 of the last user actions.

Empire Express 2.0 has many improvements including:
- New Inspector window for examining and changing the information, colors, and geometry for track and graphical objects
- Now a Universal application - built for both PowerPC and Intel based Macs
- Now uses Mac OS color picker - millions of colors, multiple ways to pick colors, can duplicate any on-screen color and save your own favorite colors
- Improved text - allows more than one font, style, alignment, and color in a single text box; preview fonts with the Font panel; check spelling and even use text rulers to set tab stops, etc. within text
- Improved undo - the number of undos is now essentially unlimited and saving documents no longer clears the available undos
- Improved feedback and appearance while drawing and manipulating objects
